Colin Burns was born in 1966. He attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, then transferred to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, where eventually he earned his diploma.
While in Boston he helped form and was the lead singer for the bands Slaughter Shack and La Gritona.
Years of making flyers for gigs honed his graphic skills. Collage elements and iconic figures are central to his imagery, and much of his work retains poster-like qualities.
In the mid '90s he and fellow Museum School alumnus R. Spencer formed HI*CON. They designed album covers for local bands as well as executing a series of multi-plate silkscreen prints. The prints combined constuctivist-like design with pop imagery (from '50s Popular Mechanics to '80s manga) and absurd authoritarian text in Esperanto.
Colin relocated to New York City where he reunited with former Slaughter Shack guitarist Dana Ong to form the band Lupa Voluma.
In the spring of 2002 Colin exhibited his linocut prints and and ink and pencil drawings at CB's Gallery. The subject of the work was his obssession with all things Los Angeles, especially first generation LA punk rock. He enlisted the help of friends Todd Perlmutter and Dave Steele and recorded an EP of covers by Black Flag, X, the Germs, the Circle Jerks and the Weirdos entitled "Coastal Envy". Also exhibiting at the CB's Gallery show was Museum School alumnus David Hochbaum.
In 2003 Colin, David Hochbaum, and Museum School alumnus Travis Lindquist formed the Goldmine Shithouse, a visual arts collaborative. In November of 2003 the GMSH had their first exhibition at the Metalstone Gallery in New York City.
Soon after they began collaborating on paintings, the GMSH began playing music together, and Murder Baby was formed. Not unlike the Shithouse, Murder Baby has a core group of members (Colin, David, Travis and Matt Martin and Chris Vitali) and invites other friends and musicians to play with them.
