Art 21 Cologne Germany 2008

On October the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, the Art 21 Festival opens in Cologne. I am in Berlin right now preparing the installation of 1000 black birds. I found a few links to some German sites and I wanna post them up here. Anyone speak German?

Germany:2008

This fall has many exciting things going on. I myself will be going to Germany to do a couple of exhibitons I would like to tell you about. The first is the Art 21 art fair in Cologne Germany. This year I have been invited to do an installation at the entrance to the fair. There is only 1 artist per year who is asked so I am honored and excited to do this. I will be putting up 1011 black birds(the most yet!) as well as have my brand new piece titled “The Big Ship:Homage to Brian Eno”.

This is all through the grace of Strychnin Gallery and their fantastic team, Yasha, Cookie, Graham, And Iris. And McCaig Welles Rosenthal gallery will be a part of the fair this year as well! I am super excited about this because not only will the lovely Melissa MacCaig Welles be there and the ever so charming Michael Rosenthal, but Mr. Colin Burns will be there! Compound this with all the fellow Strychnin artist attending and you have a sure to be fun time(oooh my future hangover).

A week after this, I will be presenting my new batch of work in a solo show titled “Mysterious Action Of Memory” at Strychnin Berlin. The Opening is October 10th at 7-10pm. here is a couple of sneak peeks…

Russian Reduction..GMSH in SanFransisco

We are converging once again to help open the new McCaig Welles Rosenthal Gallery in the Mission area of San Fran. The show is titled Russian Reduction in honor of a Russian man we met at our first Brooklyn residency in 2005 who was very skeptical of the longevity of our collaborative group. we now refer to the Russian Reduction as the cut one member takes for not pulling their weight. This cut has never been put into effect really, its just a joke…or is it bwwaahhhahahahah! no seriously,

We go into residency August 31st, live and work at the gallery, have a silkscreen party(TBA) sometime in the middle of our stay and have our opening reception on Saturday,September the 13th. Fun fun fun. The doors will be open to visitors and curious onlookers to witness the mayhem and bliss that is the GMSH. This will be our first run in San Fran and we are looking forward to it very, very much…Here is the skinny on the gallery.

My Pal

Dougles Landau is someone who has known me since `i was about 10 yrs old. He is an old friend of my Pops and has been doin some collages for the past few years and never showed them before….and now he is! He is hanging his work over at HIFI where `i have been working for the past 5 yrs or so. I curate the art there and he is next. PS, if anyone is interested in hanging some art in the hood and do not mind putting their work in a bar for a couple of months, please do let me know..

Anyhoo, if you are in the area and can make it to his reception Tuesday the 15, please do..otherwise do pop in and take a gander of his works.ill post a few pics to see if its your cup o tea

The reception is 7till 10 or so..at 169 Ave A between 10th and 11th streets in Alphabet City NYC..and here is a bio of Doug..hope you can come! and thanks for looking.

Douglas Landau was born in Manhattan on March 14, 1957, and is based in New York City. His extensive travels, including sojourns in San Francisco, Firenze, Italia, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires have fortified his art.

Landau’s work utilizes tiny stimuli to form one whole. The deconstructed images from magazine cut outs form intricate kaleidoscopic-like landscapes inviting viewers to investigate.

His compositions engage content, color and movement in a uniquely conceptual manner.

In the mid 1980’s, during the heyday of the East Village art scene, Landau opened and operated the now legendary ‘King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut’. There he produced shows by internationally recognized artists including Blue Man Group, Steve Buscemi, DANCENOISE, Paul Zaloon (Beakmans World), John Zorn, Ethyl Eichelberger and others.

Douglas Landau is a multidisciplinary artist working with photography, video, sound, and performance. His solo work has been presented at ‘La Mama’ and he has toured with the group ‘Dream Theater’ throughout Italy and Germany.

Year of the RAT

Well this year so far has been all about change and transition. There has been a lot of traveling in the first 5 months so far, Travis has moved out to Los Angeles to give the west coast a shot in the arm, Colin moved to the east side of town, and there are a lot of new friends. Great stuff to say the least. i am very excited for the next half of the year as well…here is a quick run down of whats to come….

right now you can see a new interview with Travis in White Hot magazine done by Joe Heaps…nice beard on the fellow.

If you pick up this months issue of Paper magazine you will find some of my work featured..weeeee.

Colin has been featured as well as the GMSH as Joan Wasser’s(of Joan As Policewoman) favorites to collect in this Sunday London Times Magazine section.

First off there is the Affordable art Fair, silly name huh? But The Goldmine Shithouse work as well as a few of my solo works will be up there. That starts on June 12th here in NYC.

Then there is a Goldmine Shithouse silkscreen party in the San Fran area this month, June 21st to be exact in celebration of the McCaig Welles Gallery move to the west coast. They partnered up with a local spot there and are called McCaig Welles and Rosenthal…So please do try to make it out there and tell a friend! The GMSH will be doing the official opening show there this September so keep your lids peeled for that.

Then in October I will be heading out to Koln Germany again to do a site specific installation of 1,111 black birds at the Art 21 Fair. I am verrry excited for that one too.

Right after that I am off to Berlin for my second solo show at Strychnin Gallery. I still have an incredible amount of work to do for that so if anyone out there needs an intern position, now is the time to let me know!

OK, that is all for now..details of the upcoming events will be out as they approach…lots of love and hugs.xoxoxoxo

Travis Lindquist and Jason Douglas Griffin

Heyoooo. This Friday the 21st of March there will be an opening reception for this collaborative effort by these 2 amazing artists and people, Travis Lindquist and Jason Douglas Griffin. Its only natural that after a year or so of hanging out and drawing together that these guys put together a show including tons of drawings, large paintings and installation. i have watched the dynamic between the 2 and it is undeniable. The humor combined with talents and passion is hard to ignore and not giggle, yeah, I giggle, cause its fuckin funny stuff at times. I love it and cant wait myself to see how they installed the show.

The show is in Brooklyn at the McCaig Welles gallery which has hosted such shows as Lindquist, the GMSH as well as the other 2 clowns like myself and Mr. Burns. And if you have not seen Jason Douglas Griffins work then here is a good chance to see one of my favorite peoples organic talents, and you should see him dance too, whew.

Travis Lindquist and Jason Douglas Griffin
Press Release Follows: Brooklyn, New York (February 29th, 2008)

The McCaig-Welles Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by artist Jason Douglas Griffin and Travis Lindquist titled “Life Partner.” The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, March 21st, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The collaboration between Lindquist and Griffin has been manifesting for a year. They began work on Life Partner with weekly sessions working on mixed media collage, drawings on paper, and paintings on canvas. The marriage of Lindquist’s distinct expressive lines and painterly strokes matched with Griffin’s tight, yet gracefully thoughtful drawing and painting style make for a successful visual recording of an ongoing conversation between the two.

A piece begins with a stroke of color, a found photograph, a transfer of image and is developed through the constant exchange from Lindquist and Griffin. They have, in a sense, created their own version of the exquisite corpse, a method adapted and imposed by artists and musicians alike and continuously redefining the notion of the collaboration.

This partnership has allowed each of the artists to work beyond the self- imposed boundaries and restrictions of their solo work, which becomes apparent in the freedom of the context as well as the inhibition of delivery in formal elements. This method implemented by Lindquist and Griffin has provided them with pieces not so concerned with the preciousness of the work but establishing work without fear and reservation with a sense of frankness that is refreshing and powerful.

The sense of crassness, poignant humor, and ironic self-awareness is apparent through their work and has been made triumphant through the meticulous editing process Lindquist and Griffin practice upon finishing a series of collaborative efforts for that particular session. The two produce hundreds of drawings in each collaborative meeting and editing and curating the work is just as important, if not more important to the cohesiveness of the work. The result of the methodology imposed by the duo has resulted in successful groupings of thoughtful resonance.

This is the first show of Lindquist’s and Griffin’s collaborations. The exhibition will open with a reception on March 21, 2008 at McCaig Welles Gallery.
